Pilots, chart a course for (CZO) Chistochina Airport and prepare for one of Alaska’s most breathtaking arrivals. As you descend into the Copper Valley, you’ll be surrounded by vast wilderness, braided rivers, glacier-carved mountains, and the towering presence of Wrangell–St. Elias in the distance 🏔️✨. The approach into CZO is classic bush Alaska — open terrain, big skies, and views that make you want to circle once just to take it all in. Mind your winds and density altitude, check current field conditions, and enjoy the kind of landing that reminds you why you fly.
Once you shut down, adventure truly begins.
Welcome to Hermit’s Roost, named for the solitary hermit who once traveled between this cabin and his mining claim in the mountains. Tucked off by itself on the edge of a sunny glade 🌲☀️, this authentic miner’s cabin is perfect for travelers seeking seclusion or for a small group of tent campers wanting access to their own kitchen and bath.
This historic cabin glows with rustic charm and homestead authenticity.
• 🪔 Electrified lantern lights
• 🪵 Original cabin logs and deck still in place
• 🌿 Visible traces of moss and burlap used for historic chinking
• 🪑 Burl-based table, large braided rug, leather loveseat
• 🔥 Rock-faced corner with a wood-burning stove
The interior has been newly chinked and updated for today’s traveler with wood flooring, a braided rug, a queen bed with down bedding, a fully furnished tiny kitchen and bath, and a futon that opens into a double bed. Like the other cabins on the property, you’ll enjoy down bedding and hand-crafted quilts on the double and twin beds.
The covered porch extends your living space with two rocking chairs and a porch swing — the perfect place to watch the light shift across the glade 🌅.
Guests love this oldest homestead cabin for its authenticity and timeless spirit.
Our land is rich in history and spectacularly set in the Copper Valley, adjacent to Wrangell-St. Elias National Park 🏔️.
Located on the original site of the historic Chistochina Roadhouse, this is a place where stories were once shared by firelight and tomorrow’s adventures were planned over hearty meals.
Whether you wander the trail to the Beaver Dam 🦫, fish in the Copper River 🎣, or simply enjoy complete isolation, you’ll be surrounded by wild Alaska at its finest.
