🪵 Grandma’s Cabin — A Living Piece of Alaskan History

There has been more than one man in the history of this property and lodge in Chistochina called Red. The first was one of the builders of the original Roadhouse in the early 1900s. Later, Red James became the owner, and his family helped manage the Roadhouse lodge.

Red’s mother lived in the cabin now known as Grandma’s Cabin for many years. Her youngest son was born right here. Many who knew her remember Grandma sitting at the table doing needle and beadwork 🧵✨. At age 80, she traveled all the way to Wisconsin to teach basket weaving — and she passed away there at 81.

Today, her spirit of craftsmanship and resilience lives on within these historic walls.

The original cabin logs and deck are still in place. If you look closely, you can still see traces of moss and burlap used long ago for chinking. The interior has been newly chinked and thoughtfully updated for today’s traveler while preserving its authentic character.
